EDWARD THOMPSON.
EDWARD THOMPSON, President of the Edward Thompson Company, of Northport, N. Y., the largest publishers of law books in the world, came to this country when but fifteen years of age, and started, what has proven to be a most successful business career, at a machinist's bench. He is the son of John and Ann Thompson, natives of Northern Ireland, where his father was a prominent builder. Edward Thompson was born August 21, 1845.
It was while learning the trade of machinist, in New York City, that Mr. Thompson was severely injured, necessitating his removal to St. Luke's Hospital, where he formed a firm friendship for Dr. Muhlenberg, to whom, after recovery, he became Assistant, remaining at the hospital for many years.
The deep interest taken by Mr. Thompson in his new work, combined with extreme diligence and hard work, brought him the proffer of Superintendent of the St. Johnland Home, on Long Island, which position he held for several years. In 1882 he established himself at Northport, N. Y., in the publication of law books. He is Excise Commissioner and Assessor of the town of Huntington, L. I., was appointed Fisheries, Game and Forest Commissioner in April, 1895 ; is President of the Edward Thompson Company; a promenint member of the Northern Electric Light Company; the Northport Steamboat Company; the Northport Real Estate & Improvement Company; the Northport Bank, and the Northport Oyster Company.
Mr. Thompson is a prominent member of several clubs, namely, the Wyandauch Club, of Smithtown, L. I.; the Albany Law Club, of Albany, N. Y.; the New York State Society for the Protection of Fish and Game; Manhattan Lodge, F. & A. M., No. 82, of New York; and Asharoken Chapter, U. D., of Northport. He was married, in 1874, to Miss Sarah Buchanan, and has one child, a daughter.
